Arizona Assurance is not only about access to Higher Education, it is also about success. Arizona Assurance Scholars will be provided with services to help them navigate the university system and graduate from The University of Arizona.

Students will be offered the following services to help enhance their college experience and create a community of scholars that will support each other throughout their undergraduate career.

  • Pre-enrollment program
  • Faculty mentors
  • Peer mentors
  • Workshop series
  • University advocate
  • Internship opportunities

The pre-enrollment program is a one-day event that Arizona Assurance Scholars will be required to attend the week before classes begin. During this program scholars will be introduced to the Arizona Assurance staff and given information to help ease the transition from high school to college.

Faculty mentors will be assigned to all Arizona Assurance Scholars. The goal of mentoring is to create an increased connection between faculty and students by supporting meaningful interactions in a non-classroom setting, leading to a smooth transition from high school to college, more effective decision-making, an ever deepening love of learning, and ultimately, graduation from the University. Students will meet their mentor at a meet-your-mentor event that will be scheduled at the beginning of the school year.

Peer mentors will be Arizona Assurance Scholars in their 2nd year who will work with incoming Arizona Assurance Scholars. The peer mentors will be trained about campus resources and academic strategies so that they are able to work with the first year scholars. A workshop series will be conducted by the peer mentors beginning the third week of class for a total of six workshops on topics including health and wellness, money management, and academic strategies for success. Peer mentors will also be available to meet individually with the freshmen scholars throughout the semester to help support them in their transition into university life.

A University of Arizona graduate student will be available by email and phone to contact 24 hours a day seven days a week to serve as an advocate/facilitator for the Arizona Assurance Scholars. Scholars can expect a prompt response to questions. The graduate student will serve as a contact if the students have any type of question but don’t know where to go.

Arizona Assurance Scholars will be connected with a variety of internship and research opportunities available on the UA campus and in the community. These include the Arizona Assurance peer mentor and recruiter programs where scholars will either work with current freshmen scholars to assist with their transition into the university or work with 8th grade students in the community encouraging them to prepare for college during high school and educate them regarding the financial aid that is available to them to make college a reality.

Other opportunities such as government internships, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) research positions, and other community service positions available will be shared with students based on their interest.

All of these programs will help connect Arizona Assurance Scholars to opportunities outside of the classroom to enhance their college experience and help them to develop skills that will afford them the ability to be more competitive in the job market or for graduate school upon graduation.
